NAPLES, Fla. (December 6, 2021) – For the 21st consecutive year, the QBE Shootout comes to Tiburon Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples and 24 individuals will compete as 12 two-man teams. The event is celebrating its 33rd year on the PGA TOUR calendar. The tournament is the longest running PGA TOUR-sanctioned post-season event. Here are some notes regarding what has become a favorite annual gathering for professionals, amateurs, and fans:
Field Update: Harold Varner III has withdrawn from the QBE Shootout due to a minor injury. He is replaced by Matt Jones who will team with Ryan Palmer. Jones won the Honda Classic earlier this year and will be making his first appearance in Naples. Upon winning the Honda Classic, the Australian received a congratulatory call from his idle and tournament host Greg Norman. Lee Westwood has also withdrawn due to illness and will be replaced by Charles Howell III, who will be making his 12th tournament appearance and 11th in Naples.
Winners: The field includes 11 players who won last season or the early part of this year’s PGA TOUR season. This group of players combined for ten total victories and includes: Sam Burns, Harris English, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Matt Jones, Kevin Kisner, Jason Kokrak, K.H. Lee, Marc Leishman, Kevin Na and Hudson Swafford.
World Rankings: This year’s field will feature five of the top 25 and 12 of the top 50 ranked players in the world including world # 12 Lexi Thompson, #13 Sam Burns, #17 Harris English, #20 Jason Kokrak and #23 Billy Horschel. Tournament host Greg Norman held the No. 1 position for 331 weeks. Fellow Australian Jason Day, competing this week, was also at the top for 51 weeks.
First-Time Shootout Participants: Six players will be competing for the first time in the QBE Shootout. Here are the rookies in the field this year: Sam Burns, Max Homa, Matt Jones, K.H. Lee, Hudson Swafford and Will Zalatoris.
Returning to Naples: Eighteen QBE Shootout veterans are set to return including Charles Howell III, who will be making his 12th start. Matt Kuchar and Sean O’Hair will both be making their 11th start. Billy Horschel and Graeme McDowell are both playing for the ninth time and Harris English for the seventh.
Past Champions: Three-time defending champions Harris English and Matt Kuchar are two of six past champions that include Jason Day, Ian Poulter, Sean O’Hair and Brandt Snedeker.
Rookie Team Winners: Other than the first year of the tournament in 1989, the only time two individuals, both making their first start and paired together, won the QBE Shootout were Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele in 2011.
Rookie Winners: Fourteen players have won the QBE Shootout in their first attempt: Mark O’Meara (1989), Curtis Strange (1989), Fred Couples (1990), Tom Purtzer (1991), Scott McCarron (1997), Hank Kuehne (2003), Rod Pampling (2006), Woody Austin (2007), Keegan Bradley (2011), Brendan Steele (2011), Harris English (2013), Cameron Tringale (2014), Patton Kizzire (2018) and Kevin Tway (2019).
FedExCup: Two players in the field have won the FedExCup title in the past nine seasons; Brandt Snedeker captured the season-long title in 2012 and Billy Horschel did so in 2014. Sam Burns is currently second in the FedExCup standings for 2022.
By Age: The youngest players in the field are Sam Burns and Will Zalatoris, both are 25. Ryan Palmer, 45, is the oldest player here.
Repeat Pairings: The only returning team is defending champions Harris English and Matt Kuchar, a team that has claimed victory at the Shootout in 2013, 2016 and 2020. Harris and Kuchar also share the tournament record with Mark O’Meara and Curtis Strange for the most top-five finishes by a team with five total.
New Teams: Eleven of the 12 teams in this year’s Shootout will be together for the first time.
Total # of PGA TOUR Victories: As a group, the 24 players in the field have accumulated 110 PGA TOUR and 11 LPGA victories during their respective careers. Lexi Thompson (11) and Bubba Watson (12) lead the pack. The entire field has accumulated 153 total career victories, worldwide.
Format Reminder: The order of formats for each competitive round was modified in 2014 and is Scramble (Friday), Modified Alternate Shot (Saturday) and Four Ball (Sunday).
TV Schedule: Golf Channel will broadcast Friday’s first round competition live from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. ET. Over the weekend, the final two rounds will feature live coverage on both Golf Channel and NBC. Saturday’s coverage will begin from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Golf Channel then switching to NBC from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. The final round will air on Golf Channel from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. and on NBC from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
